The Ripple Effect: Sailing with Purpose — Peter Gibbons-Neff & U.S. Patriot Sailing
The Annapolis Yacht Club Foundation (AYCF) is proud to support both Peter Gibbons-Neff’s Mini Transat campaign and U.S. Patriot Sailing, two grantees whose shared connection demonstrates how sailing can create an impact far beyond the racecourse.
Peter’s ambitious offshore campaign culminated in the Mini Transat, a solo transatlantic race. Along the way, he has used his campaign as a platform to raise awareness for U.S. Patriot Sailing, where he serves as an ambassador.

Peter’s connection to the U.S. Patriot Sailing organization began in 2019, when he started helping with boat maintenance before becoming a teammate and volunteer skipper. After returning from deployment and transitioning from active duty, he experienced firsthand the community, camaraderie and renewed sense of purpose that sailing can provide. Today, he is helping create those same opportunities for fellow veterans.

"I first came to U.S. Patriot Sailing thinking I could help the organization. It took time for me to understand how much the organization was actually helping me.
My story is only one of many. Sailing gave me community, purpose, and a path forward during a difficult period in my life. That path eventually carried me from working on a team boat in Annapolis to racing solo across the Atlantic in the Mini Transat, where I now compete as an ambassador for U.S. Patriot Sailing."

U.S. Patriot Sailing, an all-volunteer nonprofit, provides veterans with opportunities ranging from introductory sailing and certifications to Safety at Sea training, competitive racing and offshore experiences. Participants can progress from first-time sailors to experienced crew members, skippers and mentors—building skills, confidence and meaningful connections along the way.
Together, Peter and U.S. Patriot Sailing demonstrate the ripple effect of generous donor support, including from the AYC Foundation, to remove financial barriers—helping veterans pursue ambitious goals while giving them opportunities to progress from their first day on the water to becoming experienced crew members, offshore sailors, skippers and mentors.
"Those contributions are ultimately an investment in people: veterans who served their country and now have the opportunity to find community, rebuild confidence, develop new skills, and discover a renewed sense of purpose through sailing."
