Advancing the Next Generation of Competitive Sailors

The Annapolis Yacht Club Foundation helped the Downtown Sailing Center launch its first Advanced Sailing Camp, providing five young sailors with specialized coaching, racing technology, and opportunities to build their competitive skills. Participants learned advanced techniques ranging from spinnaker handling and wind reading to start-line tactics and performance analysis using new Velocitek instruments. The inaugural program also fostered mentorship, peer learning, and friendly competition, creating an important pathway for youth ready to progress beyond introductory sailing. Below is the letter to the Foundation from Margo Nicolson, Director of Community Impact and Development with Downtown Sailing Center.

Dear Sue and the Annapolis Yacht Club Foundation team,

On behalf of the Downtown Sailing Center, thank you to the Annapolis Yacht Club Foundation for its generous $1,000 grant supporting our first-ever Advanced Sailing Camp. We are grateful for your investment in helping young sailors deepen their racing knowledge, build confidence, and continue developing their skills beyond introductory sailing instruction.

In our inaugural year, the Advanced Sailing Camp supported five sailors as they took the next steps in competitive sailing. AYCF funding allowed us to purchase Velocitek racing instruments, giving participants a new way to understand and analyze important racing metrics while on the water. We also created and posted upwind and downwind performance targets on each boat, helping sailors better understand how boat speed, angles, and conditions affect performance.

The program provided instruction in several advanced racing skills, including:

  • Spinnaker use and handling

  • Reading wind and identifying changing conditions

  • Start-line tactics and positioning

  • Upwind and downwind performance targets

  • Using racing metrics and technology to improve performance

Our Advanced Sailing Camp participants also had opportunities to put their skills into practice alongside other DSC sailors. Advanced racers competed against participants in our Young Mariners program, creating deeper and more competitive start lines and giving all sailors valuable experience in a stronger racing environment.

One of the most valuable lessons from our inaugural year was the importance of creating a clear pathway for young sailors who want to continue progressing after completing introductory programs. Many youth have opportunities to learn the fundamentals of sailing, but fewer have access to the equipment, coaching, and competitive experiences needed to develop as racers. The Advanced Sailing Camp helped fill that gap while also strengthening connections between our different youth sailing programs.

We learned that access to real-time performance data through the Velociteks was particularly valuable. Sailors were able to connect abstract concepts about speed, wind angle, and boat handling to measurable results on the water. We also found that mixing advanced sailors with Young Mariners participants created meaningful opportunities for mentorship, friendly competition, and peer learning.

The Annapolis Yacht Club Foundation’s support made it possible for the Downtown Sailing Center to launch our first-ever Advanced Sailing Camp and provide young sailors with new opportunities to grow as competitive racers. From learning to use racing technology and performance targets to developing start-line tactics, spinnaker skills, and wind-reading abilities, our participants gained valuable tools to take their sailing to the next level. We are deeply grateful to AYCF for investing in the next generation of sailors and helping us create meaningful pathways for young people to continue their journey on the water.

Thank you again for your generous support and for helping make our inaugural Advanced Sailing Camp possible. We are excited to build upon the lessons learned during this first year and continue expanding opportunities for young sailors to develop their skills, confidence, and passion for competitive sailing.

With gratitude,

Margo
