“An Incredible Gift”

Earlier this month, members of the AYC Foundation Board saw first-hand the far-reaching impact the AYCF grant has on the community by attending the Brendan Sailing Camp graduation ceremony. On full display was Brendan Sailing's mission to build pathways for self-confidence and personal growth in children with Learning Differences through individually-tailored experiential instruction in sailing.

After five days of instruction, campers received their sailing certificates and showed off their seamanship skills by taking their parents and siblings for a sail. For many family members it was the first time on a sailboat. 

There was no shortage of smiles on Bembe Beach that hot and humid afternoon. The testimonials from parents and guardians underscore the extraordinary opportunity for all involved.

In addition to the day camps, Brendan Sailing offers The Brendan Approach® which equips sailing instructors nationwide with practical strategies to improve communication, adapt instruction, and create engaging, inclusive learning environments for youth with learning differences.  The Approach benefits all sailing programs by increasing student confidence and engagement and enhancing the overall learning experience for every sailor. Last month, the AYC Junior Sailing coaches participated in the program.

Jane Millman, executive director of Brendan Sailing, will be a featured speaker at the AYC Foundation's Friends & Family event on Tuesday, August 18, 5:30-7:30 at the Annapolis Yacht Club Sailing Center. She will be joined by other sailors and organizations who will share the impact the AYC Foundation is having on them personally and in our community. It is a special evening not to be missed.
