Jake Beaver Builds Strength and Confidence at the ILCA 6 Youth World Championships

Jake Beaver represented the United States at the 2026 ILCA 6 Youth World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. The prestigious event welcomed 307 of the world’s top male youth sailors from 43 countries, including many aspiring Olympic competitors. With 27 boats, the United States fielded the second-largest national team at the regatta.

Jake sailed with Key Biscayne Yacht Club under the guidance of coaches Pedro Mascarenhas, Phillip Kemp, and Bernat Gali Bou where Jake faced a demanding international fleet and challenging conditions. The US were scheduled to have two races a day for six days, but unfortunately there were two days where there was not enough wind to compete. The remaining races featured winds reaching 20 knots and large, unpredictable shifts proving to be a tricky sailing venue.

The US as a whole faced strong competition with only three out of 27 boats qualifying for gold fleet-top quarter of the fleet. This year, Jake finished 266th overall, which was an improvement from last year. Jake was challenged with the heavy air keeping his boat flat, but throughout the event his races slowly improved and by the end, he felt that his hiking improved drastically. 

"In my best race I was able to finish 16th out of 76 boats in my fleet.  The tough competition really pushed me to do my best every race and that helped me motivate myself to stay full out hiking for a little longer even when I thought I couldn't hike anymore."

Competing against the world’s best challenged Jake to push beyond his limits and strengthened his determination to continue developing. Jake felt that the Europeans teams had the biggest advantage with the ability to train year-round due to their flexible school schedules, whereas the US primarily train during the summer. Jake plans to build his physical strength in the gym throughout the year as he prepares for another opportunity to compete at the ILCA Youth World Championships in Greece.
